Seven Must-Have Essentials For Your Baby’s Changing Bag
There are so many things to consider when you travel with a baby, it can be easy to overlook a few items for the changing bag. If you are a new parent, you may not be quite sure what is essential and what will just be taking up valuable space.
While your content will be tailored to your baby’s specific needs and preferences, here are some general items that most new parents will find indispensable during a trip away from home.
Nappies and wipes
Naturally you will need a good supply of nappies and baby wipes. A newborn will get through up to 12 nappies per day, and it’s always a good idea to pack a few more than you think you will need, just in case. You never know what unexpected delays might occur, so it’s best to be prepared.
Some gentle hypoallergenic wipes will ensure your baby is clean and comfortable after a nappy change.
You will also need some nappy bags so that you have a hygienic method of disposing of them. If you are using washable nappies, look for a changing bag with a separate compartment and a waterproof lining large enough to accommodate a soiled nappy, so that you can take them home without contaminating the rest of your items.
A changing mat
Look for a lightweight foldable baby changing mat that will easily fit into your bag. Some changing bags will include this item, so check when you make your purchase. It will give you the convenience of being able to safely and comfortably change your baby no matter where you are.
Feeding necessities
The feeding items you need will obviously depend on whether you are weaning your baby or if they are bottle or breastfed. If you are bottle feeding, pack a sterilised bottle and a measured portion of formula, or a ready-made carton for extra convenience. If you are breastfeeding you may want to take some breast pads.
Nappy ointment
Take your regular nappy ointment to keep your baby’s skin protected from developing rashes. You may want to buy a handy travel sized pot to keep in your changing bag.
Spare clothes
Prepare for any of those inevitable leaks with a spare babygrow or two, so that your little one will always be dry and comfortable.
A muslim cloth
A muslim cloth is one of those handy general-purpose items that takes up hardly any space and can be invaluable. It can protect your clothes from emissions when winding your baby, or be used as a blanket to provide shade or warmth, or just for wiping up those inevitable spills and messy feeding moments.
A small toy or comforter
Most babies will be in need of comfort or distraction at some point on your travels, so pack a familiar item that will help them to settle down. This might be a dummy, a teething ring to soothe the discomfort of those first little teeth, or a soft toy.
